Its a basic fact that to lose weight you need to use more then about 3500 calories then you would normally use. This means you will not be losing ten pounds every week by dieting naturally. But with a little time you can consistently lose the extra weight.



The first step in traditional weight loss is to figure out your basal metabolic rate or BMR. A person's BMR comes down to the minimum number of calories you need each day to perform basic functions like breathing and digestion. This isn't an exact measurement that is 100% accurate everyday so you may need to change the number later.





Next, you will want to find out how active you are. This can be done by using a calorie calculator to determine the number of calories you burn in nonessential activities throughout the day such as walking, exercising, strength-training, or other such activities. Another way to do this is to create an activity journal and wear a heart monitor.



Start off by keeping a journal of your daily calorie consumption after you have calculated your activity level and BMR. You can write this down or you can use a web program like Calorie count. Don't hesitate to look up calorie information on products you consume at home. Or if you are eating out you can surf the website of the restaurant you are choosing to dine in. It doesn't take a lot of changes to sustain a healthy lifestyle.



Finally, you can add up your calories and try to keep them below the level that will result in weight loss. This means for example that if you burn 1800 calories daily with your BMR then to lose weight you need to consume less then 1800 calories. With the same logic we can easily determine that it will take burning 3500*10 or 35000 calories to lose 10 pounds. If we burn an extra 1000 calories each day then it will take 35 days to reach our weight loss goal. After you understand how weight loss works you will know what to do to lose ten pounds. By knowing this you can remove the uncertainty from the entire process.
